Speaking Engagements and Safety Demonstrations: Steuben County REMC provides experts to speak at your next group get-together, field trip or meeting. Topics range anywhere from energy efficiency and safety to the electric industry and the cooperative difference, and everything in between. Speaking engagements can be customized to fit your time constraints and subject needs.

We also perform high voltage demonstrations for first responders and emergency personnel, as well as mini live wire demonstrations for your classroom. That’s why we’ve developed an educational and enlightening program for youngsters intended to promote safe practices around electricity. We believe that by arming future generations with the necessary tools to protect themselves and their loved ones, we can avoid future complications and dire circumstances.

The mini live wire program began in 1991 when Alan Hile, the former Member Services Director, recognized a need to educate Steuben County youth about the dangers of electricity. So he sought the approval of local administrators, who whole-heartedly agreed with the cause.

Hile took his safety knowledge to classrooms all over the service area, providing demonstrations to 2nd grade students. In classrooms of awestruck pupils, a collective “whoaaaaa” rose from the crowd as Hile, donning his rubber safety gloves and hot stick, touched a television antenna to the wires, producing a visible arc of electricity. Such illustrations are essential to childhood learning, as they reinforce the severity and intensity of electrical lines.

Live Wire demonstrations are free of charge and provide your classrooms and children with a lasting impact of the dangers of electricity.
